About Course Lengths for the DTV Visa

If you’re researching the DTV Visa, DTV Thailand, or specifically the Muay Thai DTV route, one of the most common questions is:

How long does the course need to be to qualify for the DTV?

The short answer:
👉 There is no universal minimum course length required for the DTV Visa.

But in 2026, things are evolving — and in some cases, becoming more strict.

Let’s break down what’s happening.

No Universal Course Length for the DTV Visa

Under Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), the Soft Power category includes:

  • Muay Thai
  • Cooking schools
  • Cultural programs
  • Medical tourism
  • And other approved activities

In fact, in the early days of the DTV Thailand program, some applicants were approved for a 5-year DTV Visa from just ONE dental appointment under the medical tourism category.

That level of flexibility appears to be changing.

As the DTV approaches two years since inception, embassies and consulates are clearly refining how they interpret course duration and intent.

Muay Thai DTV – Course Length Requirements (2026)

When applying under the Muay Thai Visa (Soft Power category), course length is not standardized globally. It varies by embassy.

At Tiger Eye, we have processed over 700 DTV applications, with nearly 500 being 1-month Muay Thai courses — and these are still being accepted in many locations.

However, here is what we are seeing now:

1️⃣ One-Month Courses Still Work (In Many Places)

Although we no longer publicly list 1-month Muay Thai DTV courses, they are still available upon request.

Many embassies continue approving 1-month courses.

But…

More embassies are now requesting longer durations.

Jakarta (Indonesia) – New Developments

The Royal Thai Embassy Jakarta used to be a popular location for DTV Thailand applications.

Historically:

  • 1-month Muay Thai courses were accepted
  • No unusual scrutiny

In 2026, we have now seen two cases where:

  • Applicants applied with a 1-month Muay Thai DTV course
  • Instead of receiving the DTV Visa
  • They were issued a 6-month multiple-entry tourist visa

This had never happened before 2026.

Additionally, Jakarta now requires:

  • Proof of Muay Thai experience or interest

They are not overly strict about what qualifies as “experience,” but applicants should provide:

  • Past gym memberships
  • Training photos
  • Competition records (if applicable)
  • Even evidence of casual training

If you apply in Jakarta, you should be prepared.

Chicago (USA) – Major Change in 2026

The Royal Thai Consulate-General Chicago has made a significant shift in 2026.

Previously (2024–2025):

  • 1-month courses were accepted
  • Many successful Muay Thai DTV approvals

Now (2026):

  • They require OVER 6 months
  • Meaning you must enroll in a 9-month or 12-month course

This is a major change compared to the earlier flexibility.

What This Means for Your DTV Thailand Application

Here’s what we are seeing overall:

  • ✅ Many embassies still accept 1-month Muay Thai DTV courses
  • ⚠️ Some embassies now prefer longer commitments
  • ⚠️ A few embassies require 9–12 months
  • 🔎 Scrutiny around genuine participation is increasing

The direction is clear:

Embassies are moving toward stronger proof of genuine intent.

The Most Important Factor: Financial Evidence

While course length is evolving, one factor has remained consistent:

💰 Strong financial documentation is critical.

Having funds above the minimum requirement dramatically increases approval chances.

Across hundreds of applications, financial strength remains more important than course length alone.

Should You Choose a Longer Muay Thai DTV Course?

Strategically speaking:

  • If applying at a stricter embassy → consider 9–12 months
  • If applying at a flexible embassy → 1 month may still work
  • If unsure → consult current, up-to-date data

The landscape is shifting in real time.

Final Thoughts – 2026 DTV Visa Update

There is still no universal required course length for the DTV Visa.

But compared to 2024–2025:

  • Requirements are becoming more embassy-specific
  • Some locations are tightening
  • Genuine interest and financial strength matter more than ever

If you’re considering the Muay Thai DTV route, make sure you:

  • Choose your embassy strategically
  • Prepare evidence of training/interest
  • Strengthen your financial documentation
  • Confirm current course length expectations
