Thailand DTV Visa: Your Most Common Questions Answered

Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) has attracted thousands of applicants since launching in 2024, and with that comes a lot of questions. After processing over 700 DTV applications across nearly 70 nationalities and 50 embassies worldwide, we’ve heard them all.

Here are the most common questions we get!

What Is the DTV Visa?

The DTV is a 5-year visa launched by the Thai government in 2024. It allows you to stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry. After 180 days, you either exit and re-enter the country or extend your stay at a Thai immigration office for another 180 days.

The visa must be applied for outside of Thailand through the official e-visa portal or through a Royal Thai Embassy.

There are two main categories:

  • Remote work – for people working online for a foreign employer
  • Soft power – for people participating in Thai cultural activities such as Muay Thai, Thai cooking, language study, or other recognised programs

At Tiger Eye, we focus on the soft power category – specifically Muay Thai.

The core requirements for the soft power DTV are:

  • A correctly completed application form and visa fee payment
  • A minimum of 500,000 baht in a bank account
  • A certified enrollment from a registered soft power activity provider

How Do I Know If a Gym Can Issue DTV Documents?

To issue the enrollment documents needed for a DTV application, a gym needs to be a registered business and registered with the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Most established gyms in Thailand should qualify. If you are training outside Bangkok, there are plenty of well-established gyms that have been operating for years and can support your application.

One thing worth noting is that we have seen a growing number of places set up specifically to issue DTV documents rather than to actually run a gym. Some of these are in office buildings with a ring in the corner, so please keep in mind that these are not real training facilities.

This is worth paying attention to. Other visa categories in Thailand, such as the education visa and volunteer visa, were eventually cracked down on after being exploited. We do not see a different outcome for operations that exist purely for visa purposes rather than genuine training.

When choosing a gym to support your DTV application, ask whether people actually train there. A real gym with a real track record is always the safer choice.

Do I Need a Visa Agency?

Generally speaking, no.

The DTV application is submitted online through the e-visa portal or through a Royal Thai Embassy. It is a straightforward process and most applicants can handle it without outside help. If English is not your first language, or if you are not confident with paperwork, there are legitimate companies that can assist, such as Siam Legal and ISSA Compass, to name a few that have solid reputations.

However, there are some important things to understand about agencies:

Agencies have no special influence at embassies

The DTV is processed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through online embassies around the world. An agency in Bangkok has no relationship with the consulate in Madrid, Jakarta, or Ho Chi Minh City. Anyone suggesting otherwise is not being straight with you.

The responsibility is not equal

If an agency submits a fraudulent or poorly prepared application, it is the applicant and potentially the gym or school that will face the consequences. The agency simply moves on to the next client.

Some agencies operate unethically

We have directly encountered agencies willing to suggest that applicants doctor financial documents if they do not meet the 500,000 baht requirement. If you do not genuinely qualify for the visa, an agency cannot change and will not change that and using one that cuts corners puts you and others at risk.

If you are unsure about any part of your application, reach out to your gym directly. We can review your documents and help you understand where you stand.

Can Anyone Guarantee My DTV Will Be Approved?

No, and you should be very cautious of anyone who claims they can.

Visa decisions are made at the discretion of the embassy official reviewing your application. With over a 95% approval rate and hundreds of successful applications, we still do not guarantee outcomes. There are too many variables that are outside anyone’s control.

It is also worth knowing that embassies occasionally go through periods of higher rejection rates. This can happen when irregularities have been flagged and scrutiny temporarily increases. This can affect perfectly qualified applicants for a short period before things return to normal, which is another reason why guarantees are not something any honest provider should be offering.

What If I Don’t Have 500,000 Baht in a Bank Account?

The 500,000 baht minimum needs to be in a bank account, not in crypto, real estate, or other assets. Those can be included as supporting evidence, but they are not a substitute for the bank balance itself.

A few things to know:

  • The funds should be visible in your bank statements for at least 3 months
  • Large unexplained deposits shortly before applying tend to raise red flags
  • Sponsor letters are possible but are a long shot, and are far more likely to be accepted when coming from a parent with significant funds rather than a friend
  • Supplemental or passive income, even a few hundred dollars per month, can strengthen an otherwise borderline application

If you genuinely do not have 500,000 baht in a bank account, the honest answer is that you may not yet qualify. Building that balance before applying is a much safer path than looking for workarounds.

FAQ: Thailand DTV Visa

How long does the DTV visa last? The visa itself is valid for 5 years. Each entry allows a stay of up to 180 days.

Can I extend my stay inside Thailand? Yes. You can extend for an additional 180 days at a Thai immigration office without leaving the country.

Do I need to train competitively to qualify under the Muay Thai soft power category? No. Recreational training for fitness purposes is perfectly valid. What matters is that your enrollment is genuine and properly documented.

Can I apply for the DTV while I am already in Thailand? No. The DTV must be applied for from outside Thailand through the e-visa portal.

Is 500,000 baht in crypto or investments enough for the financial requirement? No. The minimum must be held in a bank account. Other assets can support your application but cannot replace the bank balance requirement.
